Wire Fraud Recovery Investigation

E3 Legacy Intel traces stolen wire transfers to identify where the money went, who moved it, and the mule accounts involved, then builds the evidence you need for a bank recall, a lawsuit, or an insurance claim. As licensed investigators (FL A-1400197) with a proprietary intelligence platform, we follow the funds and name the actors, not just document how the breach happened.

When a wire is gone, the questions that decide recovery are simple: where did the money go, who received it, and can it be proven? That is the investigation we run.

Stolen wire transfers, traced hop by hop

STEP 1

Secure the evidence

We preserve the wire records, fraudulent invoice, email headers, and payment instructions in a defensible way before anything is lost or altered.

STEP 2

Reconstruct the path

We map the transfer from your account to the receiving bank and outward, establishing the route the funds traveled and the timing of each move.

STEP 3

Identify the mule accounts

We surface the first-hop account and the downstream accounts used to layer and cash out, exposing the network that received the money.

STEP 4

Identify the actors

We connect the accounts, domains, and communications to real identities, so you know who is behind the fraud, not just an account number.

STEP 5

Package for action

We assemble the findings into evidence your bank, your counsel, and your insurer can act on immediately.

Mule-Account Identification

🏦

First-hop accounts

The account that first received your wire, usually opened with a stolen or synthetic identity and drained within hours.

🔄

Layering and pass-through

The chain of accounts used to break the trail, move the money between institutions, and obscure the destination.

💸

Cash-out and crypto off-ramp

Where the funds finally leave the banking system, including conversion to cryptocurrency, which we trace on-chain where it applies.

Kill-Chain and IC3 Recovery Asset Team Support

Recovery has a clock on it. We align our findings with the FBI IC3 Recovery Asset Team process, which can freeze funds at the receiving institution when a qualifying domestic wire is reported within 72 hours, and we document the full kill chain so your bank has grounds to act on a recall and law enforcement has a case to open.

Two packages: one for the bank, one for the court

🏦

Bank recall package

The documentation of fraud and causation your bank needs to pursue a recall and SWIFT recovery quickly.

⚖

Litigation package

Affidavit-ready findings supporting a John Doe action against the mule accounts, garnishment, and fraudulent-transfer claims.

📋

Insurance package

A loss file documenting the compromise, the transfer, and the causation a cyber or crime policy requires to pay.

Stay Protected

📡

90-day post-incident monitoring

After the engagement we watch your environment for re-compromise, new inbox rules, and credential reuse for 90 days.

✅

Vendor-payment verification

An ongoing program that independently confirms new or changed payee bank details before you pay, stopping the fraud at the source.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you recover money lost to wire fraud?
We trace the funds and build the evidence that drives recovery, but the recovery itself runs through your bank, the courts, and the FBI IC3 Recovery Asset Team. Speed is decisive: acting within 72 hours gives the best chance to freeze funds before they are withdrawn.
How do you trace a stolen wire transfer?
We reconstruct the transfer from your records and the receiving-bank details, identify the first-hop and downstream mule accounts, and identify who is behind those accounts and the surrounding communications, documenting each step to an evidentiary standard.
What is a mule account?
A mule account is a bank account, often opened with a stolen or synthetic identity, used to receive and quickly move stolen funds so they are harder to trace. Identifying the mule network is the key to both recovery and identifying who is behind it.
Do you work with our bank and law enforcement?
Yes. We produce the documentation your bank needs for a recall dispute, align it with the FBI IC3 Recovery Asset Team process, and support a law enforcement referral and the civil action your counsel pursues.
How is this different from a BEC investigation?
A BEC investigation covers the full compromise, including how the intrusion happened. A wire fraud recovery investigation focuses specifically on following the money and identifying the accounts and people who received it, for recall, litigation, and insurance.

Results

When a six-figure vendor payment had been sitting in an overseas bank for roughly a month, we traced the transaction from the point of interception forward, identified the people behind the receiving account, moved to freeze the funds, and the client recovered the full six-figure sum within a few weeks. When a $500,000 payment was intercepted and wired overseas, the forensic record we built persuaded the vendor directly, without pushing the client straight into litigation, and the client recovered $250,000.
