The Opponent Looked Clean. He Wasn’t.

The Opponent Looked Clean. He Wasn’t.

A candidate in a competitive gubernatorial race in a battleground state needed to understand who they were really up against. The opponent, a sitting mayor, carried a carefully maintained public image and no obvious vulnerabilities. In a close race, what a candidate does not know about the other side is the thing that ends campaigns.

Research, not rumor

Opposition research earns its reputation for being ugly when it trades in rumor. Ours does not. We conducted disciplined, lawful research into the target’s record and history, the kind of vetting that stands up to scrutiny because every finding is documented and defensible. A polished image is a claim. Our job was to test it against the record.

What the image was covering

The record told a different story than the podium. The target was living a secret life that included an affair and drug use, and beyond the personal conduct, we surfaced indicators of something more serious: misappropriation of authority and misuse of government resources. These were not talking points. They were substantiated findings a campaign could actually rely on.

The record caught up with him

The research contributed directly to the client’s win. The story did not end at the ballot box. Federal authorities later took up the matter, and the target was investigated and charged by the Justice Department with conspiracy, wire fraud, and making false statements. The problems our work identified were real, and the system eventually confirmed them. That standard of rigor defines our opposition research and broader political intelligence work.

If your campaign needs the truth about an opponent, documented and defensible, talk to our team.
